Pros and Cons of the S&P 500

What makes the index attractive to investors and traders, and the risks that come with it.

+

Pros

  • Instant diversificationOne position gives exposure to around 500 large U.S. companies across all 11 sectors, reducing single-stock risk.
  • Strong long-term track recordIncluding dividends, the index has historically returned roughly 10% a year on average over the long run, despite major downturns along the way.
  • Very low cost to holdMajor S&P 500 ETFs charge expense ratios from about 0.03% (VOO, IVV) to under 0.10% (SPY), far below most actively managed funds.
  • Deep liquiditySPY, SPX options and E-mini futures are among the most traded instruments in the world, giving tight spreads and fast execution.
  • Quality screening built inCompanies must meet size, liquidity and profitability rules to be added, and the index is rebalanced quarterly by a committee.
−

Cons

  • Heavy concentration at the topThe 10 largest stocks made up about 39% of the index as of 30 September 2026, near a record high, so a handful of tech names drive much of its performance.
  • Deep drawdowns are possibleThe index fell about 57% from 2007 to 2009, about 34% in early 2020 and about 25% in 2022. There is no downside protection.
  • U.S. large caps onlyIt excludes small and mid-cap stocks and international markets, so it is not a fully diversified global portfolio.
  • Market-cap weightingMoney flows into stocks as they get bigger and pricier, which can leave the index exposed when highly valued leaders correct.
  • Can't beat the marketTracking the index means matching its returns, minus fees, and absorbing every losing sector along with the winners.
Strategy

Tactics

Common approaches traders use with S&P 500 instruments.

01

Trend & level trading

Trade SPY or SPX around moving averages, prior highs and lows and round-number levels, with stops set before entry.

02

Index options

Use calls, puts and spreads on SPX or SPY to express a directional view, generate premium or define risk in advance.

03

Hedging a portfolio

Offset downside in a stock portfolio with index puts or short positions, since most U.S. large caps move with the S&P 500.
